Shepard says he didn’t rely on precise calculations:
“Often shoe lengths were used for measurement. Only the first and last sequences were shot on specific time intervals. Otherwise, I just got a feel for it and estimated the time in between shots… When it comes to measurements, the shot of République was the most difficult (appears at 1:11). For that sequence, I wanted the “dolly-zoom” effect, so as I got closer to the monument, I would zoom out. For every step forward I took, I had to zoom out just a tiny bit in order to keep the monument the same size.”
